I have long enjoyed collage, cut paper, and the look of silkscreen prints. In this painting, I wanted to simplify the way I have frequently created work for my Village series which was layering of colors and complex shapes all interlocking. While I was rehabbing from shoulder surgery in 2024, I did some simple drawings of a birds' eye view of Portsmouth Harbor. They resulted in my thinking as though I was cutting out paper shapes but drawing with light charcoal this composition on canvas. I enjoyed working with flat tones of color instead a layering colors which I frequently do and I really liked the crisp feel and energy this approach brought to this finished piece.
